Using the Reading Survey with my Team

These are only 2 questions from the Reading Survey which all ready paints a greater picture of the behaviours towards reading. Who genuinely enjoy it and read in their own time and who could care less. My goal is to change this data by the end of RPI when we do this survey again and hopefully create or share the love for reading!

I completely empathise with your observation that “as an educator it is upsetting and confronting” to find many learners don’t yet engage with reading for enjoyment. However, we know that building reading communities for participation affects change, so I was excited to hear you are planning for ways learners can participate in time to read during school, at home and to monitor their reading through challenge activities. It would be important to empower them to self-manage their independent reading challenges (and to share their challenge board with whānau) so you are only having to touch base with them to oversee progress and encourage title and genre choices.

The “good fit book” activity on the task board last week is helpful to get learners practising choosing books that are readable and have interest for them. Do you have a library at Glen Taylor that is being used towards this purpose? It’s also important to keep emphasisng the benefits of reading widely in authentic ways , for example inviting role models to talk to students about what they love to read, videos of celebrities talking about how reading pushed them further in life and sharing how reading has impacted you personally as a teacher and reader.

Looking forward to hearing how learners respond to the survey results and whether they have any ideas too!

  2. Malo Mary I agree it is super sad to think that they are not into reading for enjoyment. I know you have been thinking about how you can inspire them to be more avid readers, sometimes connecting them with a book that you read to them and then watch the movie is a good way to explore the joy of reading.
I'll look forward to hearing what ideas you and your team come up with both for and with the kids to explore this more.
Were there any interesting patterns around what they do like to read?

It will be really interesting to see whether there is an attitudinal shift later in the year.
