Thank you for sharing your reflections from today’s RPI 7 on “Thinking”. I read with interest the areas you have identified for a ‘tune up’ and that you aim to give learners’ more opportunities that ‘push’ for interpretive and evaluative thinking. That is not to say that they don’t continue to have practice with ‘seek and find’ (literal) ‘on the line’ thinking but that, as you say, we give opportunities for stretch too.

I did say to Ronil: “ It will be interesting to see how learners engage with the provocation (“Families that eat together stay together”) and whether it will give learners the opportunity to disagree.” I look forward to following up with you on how things went.

Thank you for sharing your homework from Day 6: Vocabulary (& decoding). I can see that your team uses a Word Pyramid organiser as a routine approach and wondered whether you have tried out any of the ‘robust, interactive’ templates or any other activities we introduced on the day like the ‘spotlight’ or anticipation guide? We celebrate that you have a consistent spot in your programme to foreground vocabulary. With that routine embedded, it gives you opportunity to model and phase in other appropriate methods that expand ways learners build their vocabularies. For example, you could plan to trial a spotlight or anticipation guide every third week? If you want to chat further let me know and we can Meet up with Ronil to discuss.

Look forward to catching up on Day 8!

  2. I love how you are looking at Higher Order Thinking Skills. This will engage and challenge our kids which is exactly what they need. Ka Pai!

  3. Hi Mary, this reminds me of our 'three level guide' days. It shows the importance of provocations and how these can prompt deep and meaningful discussions. We need to implement this resource into our reading plan for next week for sure :)

    1. Yes exactly Christine! In fact you read our minds because we featured a Three Level Guide in Session 1 here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/19zhovHB-Wsu3Z_sxDAMZ5ABPClS-d4GMpfTkWvH0xX4/edit#slide=id.g258b1a61b9a_0_46
